Thin walled tubes are used in a variety of energy absorbing systems and study of their large deformation plasto-mechanics is of considerable importance. Collapse of metallic tubes under axial deformation is a highly non-linear & multiple contact problem with continual change in structural geometry. Comparison and validation of large deformations response & mode shape for a circular aluminum tube under (a) 50 mm axial compression between rigid plates with (b) simulation using 360-degree FEA model and (c) 9 degree reduced sector FE model using 20 noded quadratic 3D brick elements with 2 elements in thickness direction.
